My motivation to become a financial advisor stems from my passion for investing and an enduring commitment to educate others and help enhance their financial well-being. I believe it is beneficial to the clients I serve that I became a financial advisor later in life and followed a rather non-traditional path, having transitioned from being a university professor to become an independent investment advisor representative. Prior to securing my financial credentials in 2004, I developed my investment expertise and market wisdom the "old-fashioned" way. I learned to manage uncertainty in financial markets and temper the emotional volatility I experienced as an individual investor by successfully navigating through bull and bear markets beginning in the mid 1970s.
From to my academic background, I understand and appreciate the importance of being a good listener and respecting the opinions of others. As a doctorally prepared neuroscientist, I understand the need to think critically and analytically and to maintain a commitment to life-long learning. My knowledge of behavioral finance and neuro-economics allows me to appreciate how my clients think and behave about money and help them understand that as well. Using this perspective, I provide my clients with a unique style of leadership and personalized guidance with all aspects of their life that involve financial decisions.
As an Investment Adviser Representative of Commonwealth Financial Network®, I adhere to a personal philosophy of always putting the interest of my clients first. In my advisory role, I specialize in comprehensive financial life planning, risk-managed portfolio construction, tactical asset management, tax control strategies, and retirement income planning. As a tactical asset manager, my goal is to be resilient, nimble and adaptable in the face of changing and unexpected market environments.
I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Washington in Seattle and earned my Ph.D. in Physiology and Neuroscience from the University of Rochester (Rochester, NY). I was a tenured Professor of Physiology and Neuroscience at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI, 1981-2004), before leaving academia to pursue a career in business as an investment advisor. Prior to co-founding North Star Financial Advisors in 2007, I worked as a financial advisor for Ameriprise Financial Services (08/2004 -12/2006). I have resided with my family in Ann Arbor for the past 39 years and recently welcomed our first grandchild, Ryder into this world.
I believe that the only certainty with respect to the financial markets is change. As a tactical asset manager, my goal is to be resilient, nimble and adaptable in the face of changing and unexpected market environments. I design sophisticated investment portfolios that are customized to an individual client based on their particular financial goals, time frame, financial situation and their tolerance for market volatility and systemic risk. My strategy for portfolio management relies on maintaining active oversight of the distinct constituent investments. Equally important is the need to act tactically, rather than adhere to a more traditional 60/40 balanced portfolio model in which adjustments in investment allocations largely rely upon a prescribed rebalancing cycle. It has been my experience that improved investment outcomes are more likely to be achieved over time, independent of prevailing market conditions, by remaining agile and employing a tactical investment methodology such that a client's portfolio allocations are more properly aligned with existing conditions that impact economic activity and the financial markets and especially when changes in these spheres emerge.
I utilize powerful financial planning tools and programs to design retirement income strategies to help clients achieve a financial secure retirement. This is an important component of the comprehensive financial planning process that is provided to all clients. The client's retirement plan is evaluated on a periodic basis during the accumulation phase of their investing and tracked to assess their probability of achieving their retirement goals and determine whether adjustments are needed. In addition, I encourage clients to redefine their notion of "retirement" as representing the "next phase in their life". That entails not only helping ensure that they have sufficient assets when leaving the workforce to meet all their income needs throughout their lifetime, but equally important to help envision how best to employ those assets to have a meaningful and enjoyable life. A key message I impart to my retirees is that the achievement of financial security in retirement should not be viewed as winning a game of "Monopoly". Those assets should also be viewed as an avenue to bring lasting fulfillment to you and add to your lasting memory.
I advise clients with their employer sponsored retirement plan assets through a wealth management consulting agreement. I also use the PPS advisory account platform to actively manage the assets of University of Michigan employees and retirees with their Fidelity 403b retirement plan assets. I advise clients on whether or not to rollover their 401K plans based of strict adherence to principles governing best-interest of the client. This requires full disclosure of the benefits and disadvantages of doing a rollover to an IRA, including comparison of the fees involved and acknowledgment of situations where a conflict of interests might exist.
