About Michael Whitney
I have worked in the investment industry for over three decades. Unlike many planners and advisors, I provide clients with customized portfolios made up of individual stocks and bonds that our Boston based team select. In my opinion this is a better option for clients because it avoids the problem of fees on top of fees associated with using mutual funds and other products. We also can provide comprehensive financial planning so that a client's portfolio meets their goals and risk needs.

In 2022, our firm adopted the name Waverly Advisors, LLC, reflecting our commitment to long-term partnerships rooted in strength, trust, and deep connection.

A Waverly is defined as a meadow filled with quaking aspen trees. Aspens are remarkable for many reasons: not only are they the most widely distributed tree in North America, but a grove of aspen trees is actually a single organism, connected by an intricate network of roots. This root system can grow and spread for decades before a single trunk rises above the surface. Since 1999, Waverly Advisors has been cultivating its own networkrooted in strength and growing together. Our culture and values keep our team closely connected as our presence continues to expand across the U.S.

Much like aspen trees, which rely on a shared root system for mutual support, we believe in building a strong, interconnected financial strategy that supports every aspect of wealth management. Regardless of where a client lives, they receive the same high level of attention and personal contact. Most of my clients live in New England. However, I also serve clients in California, New York, Florida and Georgia.

The most important thing to know about me is that I care about every client as a person. They are entrusting me with their savings. It is incumbent on me to get to know them as people, understand their goals and how they expect their wealth to enhance their lives.

I started my career as a sell side analyst working on various technology sectors. I transitioned to the money management business and expanded my research skills to include all of the sectors in the S&P 500 and Fixed Income.

Beyond that, my skill set broadened to include, providing the highest level of client service, financial planning as well as understanding and meeting the needs unique of each individual client that I serve. My clients know that I listen to them regarding their goals, hopes and dreams but also their fears. There is no one size fits all approach to helping a client to set and achieve their financial goals.

Portfolio Management
Clients' portfolios are structured to meet the individual needs of each client. We spend a lot of time in the beginning getting to know each other so I can provide the optimal level of individualized risk and reward.
Annuities
I would never put a client into an annuity contract. However, many potential clients already own them and cannot get out of the structure. We would discuss options and make a plan in the clients' best interest.
Financial Planning for Individuals
We use Right Capital software as the tool to build financial plans for clients. I work with an in house CFP to aggregate a client's financial information, income and expenses and goals. We then produce a plan that is constantly being updated due to life changes.
Retirement Planning
We will discuss a person's or family's baseline and aspirational retirement goals. Then we put together a plan that addresses those desires as best as possible.
401K Rollovers
We manage 401-k rollover accounts for clients. We also manage SEP IRA's and SIMPLE plans.
Tax Advice and Services
We partner with a client's existing tax preparer to develop plans that limit taxable events while still growing their assets.
Education Funding and Planning
We offer 529 plans in partnership with the American Funds.
Wealth Management
Wealth Management services for ultra-high net worth clients are delivered in consultation with other team members within the Waverly Advisors footprint of over 30 offices. These large clients gain access to more sophisticated strategies including alternative investments and option overlay strategies if needed.
Risk Management
Our investment team conducts regular risk meetings to understand the characteristics and risks within a portfolio. Regularly updating the financial plan brings other risks in the client's entire asset base to light.
Money Management
We offer creative ways for individual to increase returns on cash reserves while not adding incremental risk.
