About Theo Halbardier
I'm Theo Halbardier, CFP®, CIMA®, CAIA®, founder of The Financial Sciences Company, a fee-only fiduciary firm. I work with people whose finances have outgrown a simple plan: maximizing retirement income, coordinating taxes, navigating equity compensation, selling a business, and more.

Before founding the firm, I spent my career on the institutional side of investing, where I helped raise over $500 million in capital for private investment vehicles and consulted on portfolio construction and investment strategy across more than $10 billion in client portfolios. That background is the foundation of how I invest today: bringing the discipline, diligence, and portfolio construction of large institutions to individual investors and retirees, so my clients can invest the way the big players do.
About The Financial Sciences Company
The Financial Sciences Company is a fee-only fiduciary wealth management firm built on a simple conviction: individual investors and retirees deserve the same rigor, discipline, and access the largest institutions enjoy.

We serve people whose finances have outgrown a simple plan: retirees and near-retirees maximizing their income, executives navigating equity compensation, business owners approaching a sale, and families who want their wealth managed as one coordinated system. Our work covers the four disciplines every household needs managed: cash flow and retirement income, risk, estate, and tax.

Our investment approach is what sets us apart. We invest across the whole market, public and private: stocks and bonds, but also private real estate, private credit, and other alternative investments most portfolios never reach. Every allocation is vetted with institutional-grade diligence on sponsors, structures, terms, and liquidity, the same discipline our founder practiced through years in institutional markets, where he helped raise over $500 million in capital and consulted on portfolios totaling more than $10 billion.

We are fee-only: no commissions, no products, no hidden or layered fees. Our only compensation is a simple advisory fee based on the assets we manage, which keeps our interests aligned with yours. In other words, we do better when you do better.

Science is in our name because it is how we work: evidence over narrative, written plans over guesswork, and portfolios stress-tested before they are trusted.

Work Experience:

The Financial Sciences Company - Founder & Private Wealth Advisor (2024-present) I founded The Financial Sciences Company to deliver what I believe individual investors and retirees deserve but rarely get: institutional-caliber planning and portfolio construction from a fee-only fiduciary with no products to sell. We build retirement income plans, coordinate tax strategy, and engineer portfolios that reach past stocks and bonds into real estate, private credit, and other alternatives, with the same diligence discipline I spent my career applying on the institutional side.

Sealy Investment Securities - Senior Regional Vice President (2025) I served as a senior consultant to financial advisors, RIAs, and broker-dealers across a large multi-state territory on private real estate investing, with deep specialization in industrial real estate: the warehouses, logistics, and distribution facilities that power the modern economy. I helped advisory firms evaluate and implement private funds, evergreen structures, and tax-advantaged strategies including Delaware Statutory Trusts (DSTs) and 1031 exchanges, with a focus on how these investments actually behave inside a portfolio: the income, the risks, the tax treatment, and the exit.

Ashford Securities - Assistant Vice President, Capital Markets (2022-2024) I raised capital for institutional-quality private real estate, with a specialty in luxury hospitality, including portfolios of Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons branded resorts and hotels. Covering advisors across the western and south-central U.S., I worked across a wide range of investment structures: non-traded REITs, interval funds, preferred equity, private placements, and 1031/DST exchange vehicles. I spent my days on the discipline that matters most in private markets: diligence on sponsors, structures, terms, and liquidity. Knowing what to avoid, and why, is as valuable to my clients today as knowing what to recommend.

Beneficient - Regional Sales Associate, Originations (2020-2022) I worked at the intersection of private markets and institutional finance, specializing in secondaries: providing liquidity solutions for holders of hedge funds, private equity funds, venture capital, and other alternative investments. It was a rare vantage point on how the most sophisticated corners of the market actually work: how institutions and pensions price illiquid assets, how hedge fund and private equity interests are acquired at a discount, and how portfolios of private companies, funds, and pre-IPO positions are valued and structured. Very few advisors have first-hand fluency in that world, and it directly shapes how I evaluate every private investment I consider for clients today.

Merrill - Financial Advisor, then AVP, Corporate Financial Solutions (2018-2020) I began my career at Merrill, one of the largest wealth management firms in the country: first as a Financial Advisor delivering full-scope financial planning, retirement strategy, and investment management, then promoted into a corporate financial solutions role serving companies and their executives, including equity compensation and workplace benefit programs. I learned how the biggest institutions deliver advice at scale, and I saw exactly where a big firm's interests and a client's quietly diverge. That's why I built something independent and fee-only: the discipline of the big firms, without the conflicts.

Financial Planning for Businesses
For business owners, personal and business finances are one balance sheet. Planning one without the other misses half the picture. I help owners with the questions that compound over the years: retirement plan design and selection for the company, tax-efficient owner compensation alongside our CPA partners, quantifying the concentration risk of having most of your wealth inside the business, and, for owners thinking about an exit, the multi-year planning that turns a sale into a funded retirement rather than a tax event.
Financial Planning for Individuals
As a CFP® professional, I build comprehensive financial plans covering the full landscape the CFP® certification is built on: cash flow and budgeting, retirement planning, investments, tax strategy, insurance and risk, education funding, and estate planning. Every plan is written, modeled, and stress-tested against good and bad markets, then updated as life changes, because a plan that isn't maintained is just a binder on a shelf. Tax planning runs through our CPA partners so the plan and the return tell the same story.
Financial Advice & Consulting
Sometimes you don't need a full-time advisor. You need clear, conflict-free advice on one big decision: a pension election, an equity compensation event, a business sale, an inheritance, or a second opinion on your portfolio. As a CFP® professional, I take those on as focused engagements: rigorous analysis of one decision, documented so you can act on it. And for families who want a coordinating advisor for everything, ongoing, that's the core of my practice. Either way, the structure is fee-only and fiduciary: you pay for judgment, not products.
Portfolio Management
A portfolio has two jobs: grow your wealth, and then turn that wealth into reliable income when you need it. I build portfolios that do both, engineered for growth through your working years and for income in retirement, with a written investment policy for every account, documented before the first dollar moves. As a CIMA® (Certified Investment Management Analyst®), I bring institutional portfolio-construction discipline to individual accounts: deliberate asset allocation, cost control, tax location (which investments belong in taxable versus retirement accounts), and rules-based rebalancing. And my portfolios reach further than most. Where appropriate for qualified investors, allocations can go beyond stocks and bonds into real estate, private credit, and other alternative investments, vetted with the same sponsor and structure diligence I practiced through years in private markets.
Retirement Planning
Retirement planning answers the questions that actually decide your outcome: How much do I need to retire well? How do I grow what I have into that number? And once I'm there, which account do I draw from first, when do I claim Social Security, and what will taxes and healthcare cost me? I build written retirement plans that cover both halves: the growth strategy that gets you to retirement, and the income strategy that carries you through it, including withdrawal order across taxable, tax-deferred, and Roth accounts, Social Security timing, and the multi-year tax planning (with our CPA partners) that protects it all. Every plan is modeled across good and bad markets, stress-tested before it's trusted.
401K Rollovers
Deciding what to do with a 401(k) after leaving an employer is a bigger decision than most people are told. As a fee-only fiduciary, I evaluate all the options (leave it, roll it to an IRA, move it to a new employer's plan, or a combination) and document which is genuinely in your interest: costs, investment menus, creditor protection, and tax opportunities like net unrealized appreciation, a way to move employer stock out of a 401(k) at favorable tax rates. When a rollover is the right answer, I handle the process end to end. When it isn't, I'll tell you that too.
Estate Planning & Trusts
Estate planning is how you make sure what you've built actually reaches the people and causes you love, with as little tax, delay, and conflict as possible. I work alongside your estate attorney (or help you engage one) on the full strategy: minimizing estate and inheritance taxes, trust and gifting structures, charitable planning, and business succession. Then I own the layer where estates most often fail, the details: beneficiary designations aligned with the documents, accounts titled so they don't skip the trust, trusts actually funded, step-up planning (positioning assets so heirs inherit at current market value), and inherited IRA rules. Your attorney drafts the documents; I coordinate the plan around them, so when the plan is finally needed, it works the way it was supposed to.
Tax Advice and Services
Tax planning is where wealth quietly compounds, or quietly leaks, usually years before the return is filed. I plan across years: Roth conversion strategy, withdrawal sequencing across account types, capital gains management, charitable strategies like donor-advised funds and qualified charitable distributions, and equity compensation timing. And because of my background in alternative investments, I work with tax-advantaged strategies most advisors never touch: 1031 exchanges and Delaware Statutory Trusts (DSTs) for real estate investors, Qualified Opportunity Zone funds, master limited partnerships (MLPs), and conservation easements. These are powerful tools that demand serious diligence, which is exactly why experience with them matters. Execution runs through our CPA partners (they handle preparation and filing) so the plan and the return tell the same story.
Education Funding and Planning
Education is one of the best gifts a family can give, and one of the most tax-advantaged when it's funded well. For parents and grandparents, I build education funding strategies using 529 plans, superfunding (front-loading five years of gifts at once), and custodial accounts, including the details that change outcomes, like whose name owns the 529, which affects both financial aid treatment and your estate.
Investment Advice & Management
I invest across the whole market, public and private. Stocks and bonds, yes, but also private real estate, private credit, real assets, and other alternative investments that most portfolios never reach. The goal is genuine diversification: a portfolio designed to smooth out the bumps without giving up return potential. That approach comes from my background. Before founding the firm, I spent my career in institutional markets (a large wirehouse, private equity and hedge fund secondaries, and institutional real estate), and I hold the CIMA® and CAIA® designations in investment management and alternative investments. In those markets, diligence on sponsors, structures, terms, and liquidity comes before any dollar moves, and that's how I treat individual portfolios: every allocation has to earn its place. The standard is the same whether I'm managing your assets ongoing or giving a one-time second opinion on a portfolio you already hold.
Wealth Management
Wealth management is the full picture: your investments, retirement income, taxes, estate, insurance, and the big financial decisions in between, managed as one coordinated strategy instead of five separate accounts that never talk to each other. As a CFP® professional, I serve as the coordinating advisor: I build the plan, manage the portfolio, and work alongside our CPA partners and your estate attorney so every piece pulls in the same direction. The pieces do move together. A single decision about selling a business, exercising stock options, or converting retirement accounts touches your taxes, your income, and your estate all at once. Coordination is where that stops being dangerous and starts being an advantage. My clients are typically navigating a transition that raises the stakes: retiring, selling a business, equity compensation, an inheritance. That's exactly when coordination pays for itself.
Risk Management
Most portfolios carry more risk than their owners realize, because they're concentrated in just two asset classes: stocks and bonds. When recessions hit, everything in that kind of portfolio tends to fall together. Risk management at my firm starts with true diversification. As a CAIA® charterholder (the designation focused on alternative investments), I build portfolios that spread risk across genuinely different asset classes: public markets, private real estate, private credit, and other alternatives. The structure is designed so no single market event drives your whole outcome, a smoother ride built into the portfolio itself rather than dependent on predicting markets. Beyond the portfolio, I identify and quantify the other risks that threaten a plan: concentration in employer stock, longevity, liability, and gaps in insurance coverage. Because I'm fee-only and don't sell policies, my insurance analysis has no agenda. When coverage is needed, I help you source it in your interest, not mine.
Money Management
Money management is the professional, day-to-day side of investing: your accounts watched, managed, and adjusted continuously, by someone whose full-time job it is, so the discipline happens even when life is busy and markets are loud. I manage accounts on a discretionary basis, custodied at Charles Schwab: Schwab holds your assets, I direct the strategy, and that separation protects you. Markets move, allocations drift, and tax opportunities open and close. Professional management means those things get caught and acted on, by rules rather than emotion, and you receive clear reporting so you always know what you own and why. And because I'm fee-only, the management fee you see is my only compensation: no commissions, no products, no hidden incentives.
