Mutual Funds
Managing Your Mutual Funds
By Joel Barretto
Certified Financial Planner, Abacus Financial Network
Americans are investing a greater share of their retirement savings in mutual funds. The number of mutual funds available through employer-sponsored plans continues to increase, and 25% of the $12.9 trillion retirement market was invested in mutual funds at the end of 2004. (The Wall Street Journal, August 23, 2005; Investment Company Institute, August 2005, most recent figures available)
Why do people trust their savings to mutual funds? Mutual funds provide a level of diversification and professional money management that few investors can achieve on their own. And most people have neither the interest, the time, nor the resources to research and monitor investments like a fund manager.
Working For You
Mutual funds are managed by a professional or a group of professionals who manage a portfolio of securities on a full-time basis. Fund managers pool your money with that of other investors, which allows them to invest across asset classes and individual securities. Managers examine the fund daily and adjust portfolio holdings in order to pursue the fund’s objectives.
Fund managers typically hold several registrations and industry certifications and have experience in the financial services industry. Some may also have specialized experience with specific types of securities.
In-Depth Research
Conducting research is an integral part of the fund manager’s job. Managers often have privileged access to financial databases, industry experts, and Wall Street analysts. Some may even call or meet with company executives to learn more about the firm’s operations before deciding to invest. They also work with in-house financial analysts who conduct research in specific sectors or industries.
Mutual funds are sold only by prospectus. Please consider the investment objectives, risks, charges, and expenses carefully before investing. The prospectus, which contains this and other information about the investment company, can be obtained from your financial professional. Be sure to read the prospectus carefully before deciding whether to invest.
If you’re like most people, you may not have the energy or expertise to effectively monitor your investments around the clock. Please call so we can discuss which investments may work best for you.
Securities are offered through advisor as a Registered Representative of FSC Securities Corporation, Member NASD, SIPC.
