Arlington Wealth Planning (AWP) is a Fee-Only Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) based in Arlington, Virginia. We bring peace of mind to individuals, families, and businesses by helping them to develop a financial plan to achieve their greatest aspirations.

Our focus is on the customer experience. AWP do not use pressure sales tactics and we do not push products. We do emphasize planning and explain concepts thoroughly at a pace that works for the customer, so that they build their financial expertise. Financial literacy is important. Portfolio Management

We follow these steps to build and manage your portfolio:

  1. Assess your risk tolerance and time horizon using an intelligently designed risk assessment process
  2. Determine the target Standard Deviation for your portfolio based on third-party market risk data
  3. Build a model allocation by asset class that fits the target Standard Deviation, using third-party economic and market information
  4. Choose low cost, high quality, securities based on robust selection criteria to achieve the model allocation
  5. Establish investment accounts with our licensed custodian (including customer portal for online and smartphone app access)
  6. Trade into the chosen securities in the proportions determined
  7. Evaluate chosen securities against selection criteria to determine watch list and potential candidates for replacement
  8. Re-evaluate target allocation based on changing contents of the chosen mutual funds and ETFs
  9. Rebalance portfolio to target allocation when deviations occur within a threshold target
  10. Reassess your risk tolerance and time horizon on an annual basis and rework the target allocation appropriately
  11. Reinvest dividends and income as necessary
  12. Liquidate funds, as necessary, and shift to more conservative investments when you need to fund a a financial goal (e.g. for a major purchase or funding need)
  13. Monitor economic and market information and make adjustments to model portfolios.
Financial Advice & Consulting

We are a comprehensive financial planning practice that provides holistic analysis. We have developed a robust process that ensures we address all aspects of your financial picture to develop a plan that works. This includes the assessment of assets, liabilities, and net worth against industry benchmarks to determine your current financial health. It also includes the assessment of your income, goals, cash flow, debt, and taxes. Additionally, we identify any estate and investment related risks and develop risk mitigation strategies with you. The overall process takes a few months of weekly meetings over video conference and we produce over 20 different artifacts as we work through your finances together. In the end, we deliver a financial plan that reflects the timeline of milestones, planned income and expenditures; and a list of recommendations resulting from our assessment.

Tax Advice and Services

We prepare and electronically file IRS and State tax returns. This includes the collection of information from the client using a secure web portal and discussion of tax-related information. We also assist clients in forecasting taxes and ensuring that tax withholdings are enough to minimize any additional amounts due at tax time. This involves the assessment of prior tax years and current year paystubs, along with changing income levels, to determine the forecasted taxes and withholdings. We also help clients determine their overall tax strategy based on expected future income during retirement and associated income taxation and excess Medicare premiums, so that we can determine whether tax deferral is in the best interest of the client and whether there are opportunities for Roth conversions. The financial planning process includes an in-depth look at the client's forecasted taxation over their lifetime.

Financial Planning for Businesses

Arlington Wealth Planning (AWP) is partnered with an award-winning Third Party Administrator and Recordkeeper to provide business retirement plans, such as 401ks. AWP provides the advisory services as a 3(38) fiduciary by developing the client's investment policy; and selecting and monitoring the fund lineup according to a criteria-based framework that seeks to identify high quality funds by evaluating numerous aspects of their management and performance. AWP also manages participant enrollment and participant education regarding the 401k and its fund lineup. We are the front line, providing real time customer service to business owners, sponsors, and participants. Our aim is to create a high quality retirement plan that also provides participants with access to personal financial planning.

Insurance Planning

As part of our financial planning process, we help clients understand insurance from the perspective of risk management. We are able to discuss the insurance needed to mitigate certain financial risks without bias because we do not sell insurance are not compensated by insurance companies. We are only compensated by our clients, which means we aren't incentivized to recommend more insurance than is needed and we can be upfront and honest about insurance products and their role your overall plan. Through the use of our financial planning software, we provide clients with an assessment of the amount and type of insurance needed based on their financial projections and funding needs.

I am a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER and hold a Master's Certificate in Financial Planning from Georgetown University, an MBA from Virginia Tech, and a B.S. In Decision Sciences and Management Information Systems (DMIS) from George Mason University. Arlington Wealth Planning is a Fee-Only Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) and its advisors are Investment Advisor Representatives (IARs) registered with FINRA and state financial regulators.

How are you compensated? How will I pay for your services?

We are a fee-only firm. We have hourly fees and fixed fees for the various services we offer.
Financial Planning can be performed on an hourly basis ($281/hr) or a fixed fee determined up front by the complexity of the plan (starting at $3,024, billed 50% up front and 50% upon delivery).
We have fixed-fee retainers for Financial Planning ($6,360 per annum, billed monthly) for those who have very complex financial situations and would like ongoing planning support.
Investment management services are billed at different rates determined by the assets held in the portfolio, but never exceed 1% per annum (billed quarterly). Higher levels of assets are eligible for reduced rates (see rate schedule)
We bill $136/hr for tax return services and our planning rate ($281/hr) for tax strategy planning.
Fees for implementing and/or managing business retirement plans (e.g. 401ks) are variable based on the assets in the plan, as low as 0.25% per annum (billed quarterly).

If you are going to manage my account, will you obtain my permission every time you buy or sell something?

No, our investment management services are provided on a discretionary basis.

Will you be the only person working with me?

I will be the person you work with directly. Any additional support provided by others will be in the back-office and not client-facing.
